Job Description SOFTWARE SYSTEMS & VERIFICATION ENGINEER - BRACKNELL, BERKSHIRE, UK Salary £43,000/£47,100 - Closing Date for applications 12th June 2012.
THE OPPORTUNITY
You will join a team of test engineers whose role is the verification of new features for Broadcom’s mobile telecommunications PROTOCOL STACK. Your initial assignment will be to provide protocol stack testing and analysis expertise. The end product will be a reference platform that will be handed to other groups within Broadcom for more extensive test exposure. You will play a key role in assisting with resolution of problems identified during the productising process.
Your primary role is the verification, testing and debugging of the features (especially the new features) and functionality developed for the software protocol stack. It includes, but is not limited to, the following:-
1. Acquiring a system level understanding of the manner in which the protocol stack in the handset interacts with the components of the UTRAN (and other terrestrial networks).
2. The running of tests to verify the operation of the protocol stack. These tests may be run against a telecommunications network simulator and/or a live network.
3. The analysis, debugging and fixing of software faults found during the running of tests. This will include raising fault reports and progressing them with the relevant development team.
4. The development of test scripts with which to conduct this testing.
5. The maintenance of the test environment and automation tools.
6. The presentation of test results and analysis in a clear and logical fashion.
7. Estimating timescales. With the help of your team leader you will be expected to provide estimates for the work items on which you are engaged.
8. Progress reporting. You will be required to report progress to your team leader on a regular basis.
9. You may be asked to support other Broadcom teams who are conducting software verification and productising activities in other company sites or in the field. This will involve some travel.
10. You may be asked to assist with the interviewing of candidates no more senior than yourself.
11. You will be expected to keep up to date on technical matters in so far as they affect the work that you do.

HANDS ON PROTOCOL STACK EXPERTISE
1. A qualification in Mathematics which is the equivalent of the ‘A’ or ‘B’ grade at A-level GCE issued by the UK Schools Examination Bodies.
2. The equivalent of a good degree (ie a Class1 or 2.1 Honours Degree) from a top UK university in a Computer Science, Electronics, Natural Science, Engineering or any Mathematically based subject.
3. Proven equivalent commercial experience and technical ability may be substituted for all or part of the above.
Experience
1. The following experience and skills are essential:-
1.1. A combined total of 5 or more years experience in at least two of the following:-
1.1.1 The development of real-time software for microprocessor based target systems
1.1.2 The development of test systems and test scripts for mobile telecommunication systems
1.1.3 The running of test scripts and systems and the debugging of software for mobile telecommunications systems
1.2. Two or more years experience and highly proficient in the use of TTCN for developing test scripts.
1.3. In depth system knowledge of any mobile telecommunications protocol stack and they way in which it interacts with the terrestrial network (eg the UTRAN).
1.4. Experience of working in a team environment and with the ability to interact well and get on well with other members of the project team.
1.5. The ability to communicate well in both a verbal and written manner. The following two such skills and abilities are particularly important:-
1.5.1 The ability to discuss and report accurately and clearly on progress and problems.
1.5.2 The ability to write clear technical reports.
1.6. Well developed logical and analytical skills. In particular:-
1.6.1 The ability to analyze a complex system, understand how it is broken down into its constituent components and understand how these work together to provide the required functionality.
1.6.2 The ability to analyze a problem (fault) to find the true underlying cause of the problem in a complex system.
1.7. Well developed organizational skills.
2. Experience or skills in any of the following are highly desirable:-
2.1. Experience of developing real-time software in C or C++ and proficiency in one of these languages..
2.2. Experience of using the SDL design language, the SDL autocode generation tools (eg Telelogic Tau) and of testing SDL systems using TTCN..
2.3. Experience of target testing and real-time debugging techniques and tools (eg Lauterbach, ETM, Real-time Trace).
2.4. Experience of automating the testing of a large complex software system.
2.5. Experience of software configuration management techniques and tools (eg Perforce).
2.6. Experience of the techniques, tools, processes and rigour required to test and release a large complex software system.
2.7. The ability to learn from, analyse and understand (the sometimes complex) technical documentation and specifications.
2.8. Experience of running a small team of more junior engineers (2 or 3 engineers).
3. Candidates with any of the following experience will be given particular preference:-
3.1. Experience of testing, debugging and fault fixing any of the following using a mobile telecommunications network simulator (eg Anritsu 8480/PTS)
3.1.1 the 3GPP UMTS (Wcdma) Protocol Stack.
3.1.2 the 3GPP GSM/GPRS Protocol Stack.
3.1.3 the 3GPP Dual Mode Protocol Stack.
3.2. Experience of running, testing, debugging and fixing faults in any of the above protocol stacks using the GCF Conformance Test Suite and a mobile telecommunications Network Simulators (eg Anritsu 8480/PTS).
3.3. Experience of developing or testing any software component newly defined in Releases 5 and 6 of the 3GPP Specifications.
